Local retired teachers to hear from Albin on specialty school

DUNCAN — The Stephens County chapter of Oklahoma Retired Educators Association kicks off their first meeting of the 2012-13 school year at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 13. The meetings will be held in the fellowship hall of the First Presbyterian Church at 704 W. Ash, across from the old Junior High building.

At 9:30 a.m., coffee, cold drinks and homemade goodies will be served. Meetings last one hour or less and high-interest guest speakers are scheduled for every meeting, usually on the second Thursday of each month.

The first guest speaker this year is a courageous young mother named Meredith Albin, who opened a school in Duncan, “Live Wires Center,” which specializes in applied behavior analysis (ABA therapy) for children with developmental disabilities. The OREA welcomes all retired teachers in Stephens County to hear her message, including other school-specific retired teacher groups.

Active teachers need support. Dues are minimal, meetings are interesting and your participation will be rewarding to you. The group does many volunteer projects if you want to be a part of that.

Hundreds of retired teachers are living in Stephens County and this event is open to the public.

  • Monkeypox must be a joke from above

It’s been over 10 years since I moved out of sporting writing and began writing a column for the editorial page. Every so often this year, I’m rerunning a piece from the first year of the transition. This column first appeared in The Duncan Banner in June 2003.

  • A special day for memories

Father’s Day is a special occasion in my life. Thoughts of my dad surface easily. And lessons he taught seem to be entrenched in the lives of our three sons even though he died before their births.
