Marlow Elementary construction slated for November

DUNCAN — Marlow Elementary is about to embark on an 18-month project, which will include building a new wing to the elementary and tearing down the existing Fifth-Grade Building.

Superintendent George Coffman said the project, which will be funded by a $14.155 million bond issue approved by voters in 2011, will be up for bid in October. Construction is slated to begin in November.

“We’re working on it right now,” Coffman said. “We’re working on a plan. We break ground before long. It’s almost October now.”

Up to this point, the school district has been working with an architectural design company to create a layout for the new wing.

The new wing will be about 52,650 square feet, and will include 32 classrooms (12 of which will be safe rooms), a media center and an administration area.

Once built, the new wing will replace the Fifth-Grade Building, which was constructed in 1952.

The new wing will house students in lower grades, while the fourth- and fifth-grade students will use the main building, which was built in 1989.

In addition to the Fifth-Grade Building, three portable buildings, which have been used for pre-kindergarten classes, will be torn down.

Portable buildings usually have a life expectancy of less than 10 years, and Marlow Elementary has been using the builds for more than 15 years.

“I’ve talked to teachers and principals,” Coffman said. “I’ve talked to the board members. They are excited, and I am, too. We’re ready to get started.”

He said there is a lot involved in preparing for construction. But the school district is on its way to seeing the building built.

Coffman said it’s a slow process at times, but once construction starts, it will seem like no time until the project is completed. It will also be easier for people to see progress at that point, too, he said.

“It feels like it takes forever,” Coffman said. “Then it will start. It will go by pretty quickly.”

Although he is ready to get construction underway, he said the school district is still busy from the July 14 hail storm. The school district is avoiding making too many repairs to the buildings that are slated for demolition once the new construction is complete.

“Lately, we’ve been working to make repairs form the hail storm,” Coffman said.
