Duncan city officials to continue talks of fuel cost adjustment

Decision could affect Duncan Power customers

DUNCAN — Although it’s been discussed by the Duncan City Council on several occasions, a possible increase to the fuel cost adjustment will reappear during tonight’s regular meeting.

The Duncan City Council will continue its discussion on whether to increase the fuel cost adjustment on customer electric bills. The City of Duncan, which gets its electricity from other companies, has seen an increase in the fuel cost adjustment from those companies but hasn’t passed on that cost to the Duncan Power customers.

If the council approves increasing the fuel cost adjustment, it could result in higher electric bills for its customers.

This item has appeared on several council agendas since the beginning of the year.

Recently, the topic has appeared on council agendas in July and August, although both meetings have resulted in the item being tabled.

Because of the increased fuel cost adjustment, the city has experienced some budgeting difficulty, according to a memo from City Manager Jim Frieda.

By passing the cost along to the consumer, it would help alleviate the funding burden on the City of Duncan.

Other items:

n  The council may recognize September as United Way Month for the City of Duncan.

The United Way kicks off its 2012-13 campaign Saturday. The non-profit organization provides funding to various non-profit groups throughout the county, including the Duncan Senior Citizen Center, Christians Concerned and the Power Shop.

The campaign helps the United Way raise its funding for the local agencies and its operational expenditures.

n The City of Duncan could enter into a contract with the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center for the prevention of possible fire initiation.

The Heritage Center made a request to the Duncan City Council to allow the Duncan Fire Department to participate in the initiative from Sept. 14 through Sept. 15, during the Western Spirit Celebration.

This request was for a minimum of two trucks and four firefighters to be on location during the event.

n The council may appoint Frieda as a representative to serve on the Election Committee of the Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority.

Because the City of Duncan intends on participating with the OMPA in the development of power supply resource, the city has to have a representative to serve on the Election Committee.
