Centennial train

DUNCAN — When it comes to town, you’ll know it was here.

Imagine being sucked up by a tornado and then tossed to the side, but in a way that leaves you exhilarated and without any of the destruction and chaos.

At least that’s how Kevin Dawson describes it. You’ll just have to experience it for yourself when the railroad comes to town.

The Oklahoma Centennial Sooner Rocket Excursion will arrive Sept. 13 for a 30-minute whistle stop on Main Street around 11:45 a.m.

Duncan hasn’t seen a steam locomotive on its tracks in over 60 years.

The Sooner Rocket Excursion, Steam Locomotive No. 844, is an official part of the 2007 Oklahoma Centennial Celebration and will stop in Enid and El Reno before making its way to Duncan. It’s part of the Union Pacific Railroad’s Executive Heritage Fleet and was the last steam locomotive ever built for the company.

The event is meant to honor first responders, educators and community leaders, as well as build relations between the railroad and the community, said Kevin Dawson, Union Pacific Railroad training manager for the Wichita area.

“Their greatest recognition is a parade, maybe two times a year,” Dawson said.

Because of that, the only people who will be able to view the inside of the train and ride it are the members of the community who are being recognized at the event.

The invited group of passengers will be able to ride the train to either Waurika or Chickasha, depending on which day they choose to depart.

Even though the public won’t be able to look inside or ride the train, Dawson said anyone who is interested should still come and see it.

“We encourage the public to come down and view the train and do a 30-minute whistle stop,” he said.

Souvenirs and gifts can be purchased at the Sherman Hill Souvenir Car.
