Lions celebration

DUNCAN — The annual Noon Lions Carnival Celebration, marking some 25 years as a fundraiser for the club, returns with rides and games Wednesday through Saturday at Fuqua Park.

The carnival traditionally begins about 1 p.m. Wednesday, and runs until 11 p.m. each day through Saturday.

Chairman Ross Luttrell, who’s coordinated the event for just about all of those years, said the event is a key moneymaker for the Lions.

“We use this money to help buy glasses for those who need help, primarily children,” Luttrell said.

The need is always there, he said.

“We spend all the money we raise — locally. We are fortunate to have several doctors who work with us in furnishing the glasses.”

Teachers at local schools provide a number of the leads for the Lions, who have a committee that reviews the requests and interviews the applicants.

Luttrell estimates the club helps some 15 residents a month in the area of sight conservation.

The Lions also use the money to help fund scholarships to local students. Each year, the club provides two scholarships each to Duncan High School students and to Red River Technology Center.

Luttrell is hoping for another good week for the club celebration.

“There’s rides, games and food, something for everyone. We certainly appreciate the support we get each year. This helps us to help others who need it.”
