Lady Comets fall one game short of state tournament

DUNCAN — What had become a storybook season saw its final chapter close Saturday night, as Velma-Alma fell in the Area Consolation Finals 55-51 to Pond Creek-Hunter.

After upsetting No.12 Stonewall 42-20 in the semi-finals on Friday, the Lady Comets’ (21-8) season ended with them just five points away from reaching state.  

Seven days after suffering its largest loss of the season in a 61-35 to the Lady Panthers (25-4), Velma-Alma would not be intimidated this time.

“All and all, I was proud of my girls,” Lady Comets coach Jerry Garrett said. “We battled the whole game. Last time, they beat us by 26, but they had to make free throws to beat us tonight.”

The back and forth contest remained undecided until the final minutes, when the Lady Panthers used clutch free-throw shooting to hang on.

From the start, neither team could find a way to separate itself from the competition. Pond Creek-Huner led 12-11 after the first quarter and Velma responded by edging out the Lady Panthers 14-13 in the second. Tied at 25 at the half, the teams kept it that way by splitting the third quarter 14-14. The Lady Panthers clinched the win in the fourth, beating out the Lady Comets 16-12.

“When you look back, you see we had our chances,” Garrett said. “We get a couple more things to go our way and we win.”

Kylee Saville led the way with 19 points, while Ariah Johnson put in 11.
