Central holds off EHS girls

EMPIRE — Central High’s 9-8 lead at the end of the first quarter was a deceiving indicator of how the Central High/Empire girls’ game would go. Central High girls had only scored two points up until about three minutes left in the quarter and then the Bronchos let loose, going on to win 44-33.

“It just took us a little time,” Coach Chad Weldon said. “This is the second game that we have been on the road. It is still early in the season. We are trying to get used to playing on the road. We have had three at home. I think we were just a little sloppy at first.”

Despite 11 points from the Lady Bulldog’s No. 21 Melaina Yearby and 10 points from No. 23 Ashlie Atkinson, the Lady Bronchos maintained a unsurpassable lead for the remainder of the game.

Both teams suffered from foul trouble throughout the game causing many fans to loudly complaining about the officiating but the trouble was more noticeable on Empire’s bench with No. 24 Jessica Corney fouling out with no points recorded at the end of the night and Kaelyn Allensworth fouling out after contributing six points with two-three point shots.

For the Bronchos, No. 21 Faith Harris led the team in scoring with 16 points and No. 5 Lora-Lynn Loomis followed close behind with 12 points. Nineteen of the Bronchos’ 44 points were obtained with free throws.

The game ended with a final score of 44-33 Lady Bronchos. Central High girls are now 4-1 this season and Empire experienced their first loss of the season putting them at 3-1.
