DUNCAN —
Elgin’s season started at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night. About 16 minutes later, the Lady Demons started theirs.
Duncan spotted the Lady Owls 30 points in the first half behind a slew of turnovers and it couldn’t battle back in the second half, losing 74-37 at home.
“We prepared for (their press) and we thought we were ready for it, but it’s hard to simulate that kind of game speed,” said Duncan coach Aaron Minor, whose team committed 17 turnovers in the first half. “We kind of panicked at first. That’s all that really was.”
After going into the locker room down 45-15 at halftime, the Lady Demons showed they could go toe-to-toe with Elgin, but by that point the game was out of reach.
“We got a little more confidence as we started attacking the rim,” Minor said. “They started to collapse their defense and we started to make some shots.”
Junior Rainy Stanford paced the Lady Demons with 16 points, knocking down three 3-pointers, while senior Jamie Carberry led the charge in the second half, racking up 15 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Senior guard Sarah Ray left the game with 5:56 remaining in the first half falling to the court and clutching her knee. Minor said she was planning on having an MRI done to see if there is any damage.
Through the first 3 minutes of the game, it looked like it was going to be a close one as Elgin clung to a 6-5 lead. A 19-0 run over the next 4 1/2 minutes, though, all but crushed that idea and the Lady Owls finished the first period up 29-10.
After the lead swelled to 30 points by halftime, the Lady Demons got no closer than 28 points in the second half.
“That first game, sometimes it’s hard to gauge what you are going to be able to do,” Minor said. “We definitely found some things we can build on, though.”
