The Duncan Banner
With day two of the Chisholm Trail Holiday Shootout came a mixed bag for Duncan Basketball against Guthrie.
While the Demons were able to pull out an exciting 47-44 victory, the Lady Demons struggled in a 57-21 defeat.
Finding itself down 23-16 at halftime, Duncan found a lifeline in the form of Jack Braught in the second half.
After being forced to sit the majority of the second quarter due to foul trouble, the senior more than made up for lost time, scoring the bulk of his 21 points, including two clutch free throws with 12 seconds left to help Duncan win 47-44.
“Jack (Braught) is everything to this team and really leads us well,” Duncan coach Mikel Davison said. “Some of our guys get a little rattled in games like this. But, Jack really helped settle us down. This is an exciting group of kids to coach and I’m very proud of them.”
Before Braught sealed the game, it was Cade Baldwin giving the Demons the lead with a floater in the lane, making it 45-44 with 0:46 left in regulation.
Guthrie’s Jillian Chappell tried to send the game into overtime, but his three-point attempt struck iron and fell to the floor as the final horn sounded.
Early on, both teams traded the lead back and forth as the Demons’ biggest lead of the first half was three points.
In the second half, Duncan took the lead for the first time at the 1:32 mark at 33-32 following a strong run to open the third quarter, as the Demons led 38-32 going into the fourth.
Braught added four rebounds and three steals in addition to his team-leading point total.
Isiah Ervin added 12 points and six rebounds on the evening for Duncan (5-3), while Je’Mario McCoy totaled eight points and six rebounds.
Guthrie (1-4) was paced by Aailyah Allison with 19 points, followed by Cassidy Jones with six points.
Anything that could go wrong on Friday, went worse for the Lady Demons.
DHS struggled to find its scoring rhythm against the Lady Blue Jays, going into halftime down 22-9, before eventually falling 57-21.
Guthrie never let the Lady Demons get into the game, racing out to an early 15-3 lead after one quarter.
Duncan tried to get back into the contest, making the score 39-15 with 2:32 left in the third, but it wasn’t to be on the day.
Rainy Sanford led the scoring for the Lady Demons (1-7) with six points on the day, followed by Jamie Carberry with five points. Quita Carr put in four points in the game.
Guthrie (3-3) was led by Melinda Murillo with 19 points, followed by Micayla Haynes with 10 points.
