Oh Brothers!

No. 3 Guthrie thumps No. 5 Duncan, 25-0

GUTHRIE — Kentrell Brothers showed Friday night why he’s one of the top players in the state. His team showed that it is a serious contender for the Class 5A state championship.

Guthrie, ranked No. 3 in the preseason AP Oklahoma Prep Poll, shutout No. 5 Duncan 25-0 in the season opener for both schools. Brothers hauled in three touchdown receptions of 54, 50 and 49 yards, all in the first half, in leading the Bluejays to a big win in Week 1.

It didn’t take long for the Bluejays to assert themselves. Guthrie received the opening kick and started at the 20-yard line after a touchback. Three runs by Alphonso Wilcots moved the Bluejays 26 yards upfield.

Sophomore quarterback Bryan Dutton faked a handoff on the next play and rolled to his right, finding Brothers in the middle of the field on a drag route. Brothers did the rest, breaking a few tackles and using his speed to cruise into the end zone. He also took a direct snap and ran it in for the two-point conversion to put Guthrie on top 8-0.

That was only the beginning.

On the ’Jays’ next drive, Dutton found Brothers again on a similar play with an equal result.

“Brothers made two great plays early in the game,” Duncan head coach Jim Holloway said. “He made some moves in the open field and we couldn’t tackle him. ... He’s an All-State Football player and he came to play tonight.”

Duncan, which had big expectations coming into the 2010 season, never got into a rhythm on offense. The first Demon drive ended in a three-and-out and there were turnovers on the next two possessions.

“Guthrie played a lot faster than we expected,” DHS quarterback Brandon Wilson said. “You can’t really get their rhythm by watching them on film. They were very fast on the field tonight and we couldn’t handle it.”

Wilson was banged around much of the night, being sacked seven times and also taking some hits on a few of his runs.

Just before the end of the first quarter, Duncan found its rhythm, moving the ball to the Guthrie 13-yard line. Wilson rushed for 11 yards on the first play which ended the quarter. He found Jared Griffin over the middle for a 26-yard gain and the Bluejays were called for a personal foul facemask on the play.

The Demons went backward from there largely because of two sacks. Jack Braught missed a 39-yard field goal and the drive ended.

On Duncan’s next possession, Domonique Petties and Wilson carried the Demons to the Guthrie 21-yard line before the drive stalled. Braught missed his second field goal of the night, this one a 38-yard attempt.

Guthrie went for the jugular with a halfback pass by Kai Collins to Brothers. Brothers was wide open down the right sideline and waltzed into the end zone for the final tally on the scoreboard.

“In our opinion, we try to jump out to a fast start in every game,” Guthrie head coach Rafe Watkins said. “That was very key, especially early in the year. We talked all week about it. Duncan is a very good team and we’re very fortunate to have played like we did tonight.”

Petties was the leading rusher for the Demons with 38 yards on four carries. Wilson finished the night 9-for-22 for 87 yards and an interception with minus-24 yards rushing. Griffin had two receptions for 36 yards.

Brothers had four receptions for 170 yards and three touchdowns for Guthrie. Dutton was 10-for-11 for 163 yards with two touchdowns while carrying the ball eight times for 11 yards. Wilcots rushed 19 times for 103 yards.

Duncan will host Noble at 7:30 p.m. Friday for its home opener.

Even though Duncan experienced a slight shower Sunday morning, it wasn’t enough to halt the final day of the Jess Welch Memorial Tournament at Abe Raizen Park.
