DUNCAN —
The Duncan High School volleyball team would have liked a win, but instead settled for a step forward in its second match of the season.
The Lady Demons, who are at the start of a rebuilding year with a new coach and almost entirely new varsity roster, fell to 0-2 on Thursday at Big Pasture, but walked away with something to build on as they claimed a set for the first time, falling 3-1 (25-11, 19-25, 25-12, 25-12).
“I think it gave them a big boost of confidence. They needed it,” Duncan coach Sandy Mitchell said of winning the second game of the match. “I was a little stunned the way we played the third game after winning the second. You could see the confidence in their faces, we just couldn’t do anything with it that third set.”
Serving largely dictated the match. It was strong serving that helped Duncan claim the second game, and poor serve-receive that cost the Lady Demons the rest of the match.
“We’ve got to do a better job of anticipating where the ball is going to be,” Mitchell said. “We are getting there just a second too late.”
Junior middle hitter Ikeia Averitt had four kills on nine attacks to lead Duncan at the net, while senior outside hitter Cheyenne Brady had four aces and an assist. Freshman Delany Mitchell had two blocks, sophomore Carly Kirkland recorded nine digs and an assist and junior Kayla Condern had two assists.
“We made a lot of improvements from the Cement match,” said Mitchell, whose team fell to Cement on Aug. 9 in its season opener. “Each girls did some pretty good things. I just wish we could have had the win.”
The Lady Demons will try again for their first win this weekend as they head to the Cameron Tournament in Lawton.
