The Duncan High School wrestling team is still feeling the effects of football season.
The Demons were without five wrestlers Friday, all still trying to recover from lingering football injuries, as they took on Chickasha on Thursday. It proved too big a burden to overcome and Duncan fell in a dual that was decided in the final match, 35-33.
“I don’t think we wrestled real bad overall, we just had four guys out of the lineup,” Duncan coach Kevin Kelly said. “I wrestled four freshmen tonight, and against a good team like Chickasha, that will kill you.”
Things were looking pretty good for the Demons midway through the evening after Markwae Sanders (113 pounds), Jett Gray (126) and Christian Carnahan (152) won their matches via pinfall to give Duncan the lead in points.
In the final six weight classes, though, Duncan won just two matches, including one by forfeit, and the Chicks scored a pin in the heavyweight match to seal the victory.
It marked Duncan’s first loss in a dual this season after winning its opener against Lawton High, 45-30 on Tuesday.
The Demons are slated to step back onto the mat on Dec. 13 to take on Comanche. They hope to have two of their injured football player back by that time, but it will be a bit longer for the other three.
“It will be a while before we get the others back,” Kelly said. “Broken bones, they take a while to heal.”
