Velma-Alma closes strong on Comanche

COMANCHE — There are two words a coach hates to hear during a game. Shooting drought.

For the Comanche Lady Indians, they experienced a very severe drought in the second half Tuesday night against Velma-Alma.

After cutting the Lady Comets lead to 19-15 at the 4:45 mark of the third quarter, CHS didn’t score again until the 3:43 mark of the fourth quarter, ultimately leading to a 38-19 defeat on the evening.

“We did a good job defensively all night trying to keep them (Comanche) stretched outside,” V-A coach Jerry Garrett said. “That was a good stretch holding them scoreless, and we really stepped up and I’m very proud of the girls for how they played.”

Consider the gameplan a success for the Lady Comets, as Comanche went 1-of-16 shooting from outside the arc on the evening.

“I knew Comanche had a big girl on the inside, and we obviously were undersized,” Garrett said. “We wanted to keep them to just one shot and get rebounds on the defensive end.”  

While buckets were few and far between for CHS, the Lady Comets meanwhile were having success and building a solid lead in the third and fourth quarters, keeping the Lady Indians from getting any closer than 15 points the rest of the game.

“We knew we were going to have these kinds of nights being in a rebuilding year,” Comanche coach Sean Hushbeck said. “You hate to have them happen at home against your arch rivals though. I think the most frustrating part was that we were functioning on offense but the shots weren’t falling for us. We’re just going to have to get better every game.”

V-A jumped out to a 7-2 lead with 3:43 left in the first, after Teddi Southerland scored five points in 10 seconds. First it was a fast break lay-up, then Southerland got her own rebound after missing the free throw, sinking a shot from outside the arc.

Comanche just managed four points in the first quarter, trailing 9-4 at the end of one, before going into the locker room down 19-9.

Leading the scoring for the Lady Comets (1-1) was Southerland with 10 points on the evening, followed by Kylee Saville with nine, and Jordan Layn with eight points.

For the Lady Indians (1-1) Hannah Suson scored nine points while Jenny Simpson put in five points.

These two teams will reacquaint themselves with one another Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. in Velma during the first round of the Bullet Energy Comet Classic tournament.
