Speedy Demons claim season opener over Elgin

DUNCAN — Talking with the game announcer following Tuesday night’s contest, Duncan coach Mikel Davison suggested instead of announcing players’ heights, he announce their 40-yard dash times.

“Now, that would be intimidating,” Davison said.

The Elgin Owls can certainly attest to that after being picked apart by Duncan’s speedy defense, which broke open the game early as the Demons cruised to a win in their season opener, 77-55.

“We know that good defense can turn into offense,” said Duncan senior guard Cade Baldwin. “As long as we play good defense, we know we can get out and score in transition, which is our kind of style.”

The Demons wasted no time in implementing that style, forcing 10 turnovers in the first quarter, opening with a 15-0 run and ending the period up 24-7.

“That’s what we’ve got to do,” Davison said. “We’ve got to come out and defend.

“We’re small, so we’ve to go play hard and force turnovers.”

After leading 36-20 at halftime, the Demons all but sealed the victory in the third quarter as they built a 62-33 lead.

Junior Je’Mario McCoy scored a team-high 19 points, while senior Jack Braught finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Junior Isiah Ervin racked up 15 points, five rebounds and three seals, Baldwin had 11 points, five rebounds and five steals and junior DeAndre Vermaire added eight points off the bench.

“This sets our emotions up high and gives us some confidence,” said Baldwin, who is one of four new starters on a team that graduated five of its top six players from last season.
