EDMOND — It’s all coming full-circle for Cody Rowell.
The former Duncan Demon wrestler finished his wrestling career at the University of Central Oklahoma on the biggest stage of his life.
Just over a month ago, Rowell and his teammates held their final home match against Newman University. A strong contingent of Rowell supporters made the trek to Edmond to watch the senior in his final regular season match.
“It was just surreal at first and good because a lot of people from Duncan came and from when I was little,” Rowell said. “I got a big win, 18-3 I think, and it was a good feeling to go out with a win in my home gym in front of my parents and other people around. It was good to have their support.”
After that match, Rowell had two weeks to prepare for the regional tournament in which he was seeded No. 7. Rowell placed fourth at regionals to advance to nationals.
“It was a thrilling feeling. I knew it was now or never,” Rowell said. “It was probably the most determined I’ve ever been to get somewhere.”
Rowell lost his first match at nationals, but won 9-2 in his next match and faced his toughest challenge next, a two-time returning All-American and runner-up from a year ago.
Rowell rose to the challenge, scored a few late points to win and sealed his fate as an All-American. Rowell lost his two matches the next day, but said the ending was bittersweet.
“I was glad to get it over with and get All-American, but I didn’t want to go out with a loss,” he said. “Now, I want to come back to Duncan and coach where it all began.”
