Like the 64 NCAA basketball teams vying for a national collegiate championship, “tournament time” will begin for the Comanche baseball team Thursday.
The Indians (3-5) will take part in its first tourney of the season in the Pauls Valley Tournament, starting today against Wynnewood.
“I’ve said it before, the biggest thing we have going for us is the overal attitude this year,” Indians coach Nick Reed said. “That being said, this tournament will be tough. We’ll be facing some really strong teams.”
Comanche enters the fray playing some of its best ball. The team hung tough with No. 6 Marlow in a 5-4 loss before winnng its next two games against Lindsay and Empire. The team was without four of its starters in its most recent contest, an 8-0 loss at Davis.
The Indians will hope that the Savages’ road woes continue with their matchup, as Wynnewood has dropped four of its five contests away from home.
Should Comanche beat Wynnewood, the Indians will face the winner of the Davis and Bethany matchup.
The teams involved have become pretty familiar with one another: Davis has beaten Comanche twice by a combined score of 19-4 and edged out Wynnewood in a 1-0 win two weeks ago.
“Davis hits well, Wynnewood has faced some tough teams and Bethany has already beaten quality teams like Heritage Hall,” Reed said. “It’s important that we continue to finish games as well as we have earlier in the year.”
The team will be without second baseman Tanner Ressell, a key cog in helping the Indians move baserunners with bunts, as he will likely miss the rest of the season with a broken clavicle.
Comanche has circled April 3 as a day to remember, as that is when first baseman Cody Crow returns to the lineup after recovering from an injury he suffered during football season. In the time being, Johnathon Robinson and Kale Reed have filled in at first. Reed said that Crow’s return gives the team’s more options in its lineup and defensive makeup.
“Getting him back will be a massive help right away,” Reed said. “He’s a big target to throw to and is able to scoop up anything thrown at him.”
Play is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. today.
