COMANCHE —
At any given time in the sport of football, a player might be asked to switch positions, whether it be on the offensive or defensive side of the ball.
For Comanche senior Kale Reed, his transition went from catching the football, to throwing the football.
After playing backup during the 2011 season, Reed has stepped in under center for the Indians this season, helping them get off to a 2-1 start.
“We’re really not surprised at how Kale has performed,” Comanche coach Steve Justus said. “He played a little at quarterback as a freshman and he’s a great athlete as well. Great athletes make plays. He’s also got some really good character and is a fine young man.”
While most players might have difficulty adjusting from running routes to calling them, Reed’s was made rather smoothly thanks in part to his brother, Nick, who is also Comanche’s head baseball coach, another team Kale is apart of.
“I’ve always known he’s had the arm strength from baseball,” Nick said. “That and his God given talent are what has carried him. The only thing I’ve really tried to help him with is reading coverage downfield. We’ve watched some film together and it seems to be helping him out.”
Kale also added his brother has helped him with throwing technique as well.
“My brother is always giving me pointers when it comes to release,” he said. “He’s always making sure I’m not throwing sidearm, and that I’m finishing with my follow through. It’s cool for me because he’s still coaching me, but it’s from a football perspective now instead of a baseball one.”
Perhaps the defining moment of Kale’s season thus far, came in the season opener against the Velma-Alma Comets.
Through the first half against V-A, Kale had struggled running and throwing the ball against a tough Comet defense.
“I knew he (Kale) was going to be nervous before the game,” Nick said. “But, I just thought it would last for the first couple of series. Unfortunately, it lasted through the entire first half.”
In total, the senior had just six carries for 34 yards on the ground, combined with 2-for-7 passing for just 23 yards. Add to it, his team was down 18-8 at halftime.
“When we got to the locker room, we saw some things we felt like we could exploit in the second half,” Justus said. “Those adjustments included moving an extra blocker over, so that Kale could get the ball and run with it. We weren’t worried at all about his speed, because we knew it was there.”
With the gameplan in hand, it was up to Kale to execute. Which he did with impressive results.
Four touchdowns later, CHS was in command of the contest. As for Reed, he finished with 188 yards rushing for the contest along with 9-for-14 passing for 83 yards.
“After the first touchdown, then I was excited along with the rest of the guys,” Kale said. “But, we still knew we had some work to do. Once we got ahead then the pressure started to go away and everything went smoothly.”
