Marlow and Comanche face off

DUNCAN — When examining the Comanche and Marlow baseball teams, it’s easy to notice the similarities.

The clubs hail from the same county, play in the same class and each desire their first win since taking their season openers.

Their coinciding paths will cross Monday, when the No. 5 Outlaws (1-2) travel to Comanche to take on the Indians (1-3).

For Comanche, it’s about getting the offense back on track after scoring a combined five runs in its last three games.

“We have to get the bats rolling early on, not just late in the game and get runners on base,” Indians coach Nick Reed said. “Defensively, we have to see the ball better and make plays.”

The Indians may have started to hit their stride at the plate late in its last game, an 11-4 loss to No. 12 Davis on Friday, as it scored three runs and put four runners on base in the game seventh and final inning. Most of the team’s scoring came from second baseman Tanner Ressel, who scored one run in the second inning and knocked in two more on a seventh inning RBI triple.

Johnathon Robinson is expected to take the mound for the Indians as they try to end a three-game losing streak.

“Marlow’s a good team, we beat them 6-2 last year and then they run ruled us the last time we met,” Indians coach Nick Reed said. “They’re well coached, and it’s a group that’s been playing together for a long time.”

No matter the opponent, Marlow will not go down easily. The Outlaws used an eight run sixth inning to come back and beat Cache last week and nearly did the same to No. 4 Tuttle last Friday, scoring two runs in the seventh to pull within one run in a 4-3 loss to the Tigers.

“In our first couple of games we were a little rusty, the bats were a little behind,” Outlaws coach Jeff Brewer said. “We didn’t get frustrated, continued to compete and I see the way we played against Tuttle as a turning point.”

Depsite losing two of its first three, the Outlaws know they can depend on its pitchers to keep them in any game going forward. Senior Wakely Bergner kept Cache scoreless for six of seven innings and struck out 12 in the team’s season opening win while Trey Coffman let up just one earned run in the team’s loss to Tuttle Friday.

“We’re really anxious to see what we can do these next few games,” Brewer said. “Playing teams like Comanche, Frederick and Sulphur, we’re going to face teams we could run into at districts and regionals. It’s going to be a great indicator for where we are as a team.”

Play is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
