Demons hold off Southeast

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Duncan Demons got everything they were looking for Thursday night in Oklahoma City. It just didn’t come as easy as they would have like.

Needing to not only beat Southeast, but win by at least 15 points to stay in the hunt for a district title, Duncan came into the fourth quarter clinging to a one-score lead before finally pulling away for a 44-21 victory.

“That’s the bottom line, we won and we got the 15,” Duncan coach Jim Holloway said. “For a while, I just wanted to win, and I thought we would be lucky to do that.”

Three lost fumbles by Duncan (5-3 overall, 4-1 district), kept the Spartans (2-6, 1-4) in the game.

After trailing 7-0 early, Duncan finished the first quarter ahead 15-7 and was up 22-7 at halftime.

Southeast refused to go away, though, and cut it to 28-21 by the end of the third quarter before Duncan’s defense clamped down.

With the win, Duncan can finish in a three-way tie for the district title if it beats Del City next week and then Chickasha in Week 10.
