DUNCAN — With spring break in full force, comes the end of the first phase of baseball season for area high school teams.

Here’s a look at how Stephens County teams have fared up to this point.

DUNCAN

With an unbeaten district record and an offense that has come into March like a lion, the No. 15 Demons have plenty to be happy about after five games.

After falling to Lawton Eisenhower in its opener, Duncan bounced back by beating Southeast by a combined total of 24-4 in a home doubleheader.

Senior pitcher Dillon Stanley has thrived on the mound, starting in two of the team’s wins. One of those victories was a measure of revenge: a 14-6 home win against Eisenhower.

The Demons have done their best to protect their home turf, going 3-0 in home games to open the season.

The Demons will try to win its fourth straight when it hosts Ardmore for the second time in two days at 4 p.m.

COMANCHE

The Indians (3-5) have been tested early and often, having already faced three top twenty teams.

In that stretch, the team has counted on Kale Reed to contribute both at the plate and on the mound. Reed’s best performance came in a 10-2 victory against Empire earlier this season. Reed struck out ten batters and went 2-3 with a two run homerun.

Some of the team’s early struggles came when facing Davis, who they fell to 11-4 at home two weeks ago and 8-0 on the road Friday.

Up next for the Indians will be Wynnewood Thursday, as part of the Pauls Valley Tournament.

Empire

When it returns to play after spring break, the Bulldogs (3-5) will try to build momentum after consecutive losses to Rush Springs and Comanche.

The team entered 2013 with a handful of newcomers who have used Empire’s first eight games to get acclimated. It’s outfielder Freddy Larson’s first time playing baseball and freshman pitcher Mace Robinson is back on the diamond for the first time in three years.

Robinson’s debut was one to remember, as he pitched a no hitter at home against Geronimo two weeks ago.

Empire’s losses have come with a common theme: struggles with closing innings. This was seen in its 10-2 loss at Comanche last week, when the Bulldogs allowed five runs in the second inning after getting the Indians’ first two batters out with ease.

Baseball comes back to Empire on March 25, when the Bulldogs return to action against Ninnekah.

Marlow

Following a loss to No. 4 Tuttle, Outlaws coach Jeff Brewer called it a “turning point” for the team.

Take one look at the team’s schedule, and it appears that Brewer was on to something.

Marlow went into spring break on a tear, winning its last five games by a combined 35 runs. During that streak the offense has clicked on all cylinders, as the Outlaws have averaged 10 runs a game in that time.

The origin of that streak did not come easy. Against Comanche, Marlow nearly lost a 5-1 lead in the top of the seventh before sophomore Beau Mitchell sealed the close victory.

Stone-Black Field has been a sanctuary for Marlow (6-2) so far, as the team has won three straight home games to open the year.

The Outlaws will try to continue its winning ways at the Washington Spring Break Festival, starting on Thursday.

VELMA-ALMA

Even though it’s still early in the season, the Velma-Alma Comets have shown plenty of reason to be taken serious in the coming months.

Despite sporting a 2-4 record, three of those losses have come by less than three runs with two of them coming against Central High.

With the strong arms of Christian Florez and Kelton Brown, combined with the bats of Strait Ille, Colby Martin and Evan Albertson along with the rest of the Comets, V-A could make a lot of noise in the second half of the season.

After spring break the Comets will travel to Ringling on Mar. 25 before hosting Rush Springs on Mar. 26.

CENTRAL HIGH

Under first year head coach Harley Nelson, the Central High Bronchos have tasted success in the early part of the season, compiling a 9-4 record.  

A second place finish in the Red Dirt Classic was followed up by a third place finish at the Sterling Tournament.

CHHS’ only losses have come against Verden, Rush Springs, Healdton, and No. 3 Sterling.

There’s been no shortage of standout players on the Bronchos this season, with senior Jarrett Sparks fueling Central High’s defense from the mound.

Ashton Wright, Austen Dewitt, Derek Davis, Mikel Womack and Kade Taylor have also been giving opposing teams fits at the plate this season.

CHHS will be looking for more contributions from John Repp and Matthew Quisenberry along with Roger Robertson as the season progresses.

Central High will meet No. 7 Marlow on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. before meeting Sterling on Monday afternoon at Broncho Field.

BRAY-DOYLE

After a sluggish start to the season, the Bray-Doyle Donkeys (5-4) have found their stride heading into the second half.

Following its first victory of the season against Temple, first-year head coach Cody Tutwiler and his squad swept this past weekend at the Calumet Festival defeating Geary, Butner and host Calumet.

B-D will go into the next half of the season on a four-game winning streak after defeating Healdton Monday afternoon by an impressive 8-0 scoreline.

Cody Watson, Rodney Hall and Greg Perez will be among the players to watch as the Donkeys look for more victories in the coming months.

Monday Mar. 25 will see the Donkeys travel to Rush Springs before hosting a double-header on Tuesday Mar. 26 against Alex and Calumet at 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. respectively.
