Playing in his first varsity baseball contest, Empire freshman pitcher Mace Robinson made quite the first impression in the Bulldogs’ win against the Geronimo Blue Jays Thursday night.
Robinson’s audition with the Bulldogs ended with a no hitter, as he let just one player on base with a walk.
Not bad for someone who had been out of baseball for the last four years.
“It feels great. My teammates were really helping me out,” Robinson said. “It was all about fastballs, right down the middle.”
Robinson kept Geronimo (0-1) in check, the Bulldog offense exploded, and Empire cruised to a 12-0 win in four innings.
“We found good pitches to hit, we didn’t chase out of the zone and we stayed aggressive,” Bulldogs coach Caleb Cole said. “One thing we can work on is focus and staying motivated. I think we start and finish games on a high, but in the middle of the game we can hit a lull.”
Braden Hill got the scoring started in the first inning with a single to centerfield. Hill stole second and was then knocked in by a Cole Bridges single to second base.
Steven Price knocked a single to first, and Bridges came home on a throwing error.
Three more Blue Jays (0-1) errors brought in four more Empire runs in the first, then Robinson went back to work.
The freshman shut Geronimo down in the second, and the Bulldogs scored four runs in the bottom half on three throwing errors and Dakota Billbree scoring on a Freddy Larson groundout to first.
After Empire put up two more runs in the fourth, Robinson drew a flyout and then two strikeouts to secure the Bulldogs victory.
The team returns to action tonight at 4:30 p.m. at Ringling.
