DUNCAN —
The streets of Velma will again be filled the with the clatter of sneakers hitting the pavement as more than 100 runners navigate the 5-kilometer course.
After a successful inaugural year, the Mayor’s 5K Road Race is set for its second running Saturday.
“Having a 5K was something we had already talked a little bit about (last year) with the cross country team and then the mayor just happened to come by and wanted us to put together an event to draw people into the town, and also give people here in Velma something to do,” said race organizer and Velma-Alma High School cross country coach Jerry Loveall. “It was something we wanted to do and the city might help sponsor it.”
Last year’s race saw 130 runners cross the finish line and Loveall said they could be on track for even more this year.
“We’re probably running a little ahead of last year at this point,” he said. “We’ve added an option to sign-up online and we’ve gotten a good response from that.”
The 5K — and the 1-mile fun run — begin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at Velma-Alma High School.
The race, which is broken into eight age groups, is $15 for those who pre-register and $20 to register on the morning of the race. Pre-registration ends Monday and only those who pre-register will be guaranteed a race T-shirt.
The event serves as a fundraiser for the Velma-Alma cross country team, which will have most of its members among the field, trying to show the community what they can do.
Also among the field will be a number of former Velma-Alma cross country runners.
“When I look at the entry list, I see names of kids who have run cross country here for the last 20 years, and that’s pretty neat,” Loveall said.
Those wishing to register can do so online at
