MARLOW — Wrestling season is around the corner and with it the Marlow Open Tournament.
Wrestlers from across the state will descend on Marlow Saturday and pick up some all-important mat time in preparation for the start of the season. Wrestlers will compete for top honors in each of the Marlow gyms. Divisions for the tournament will consist of 6th & 7th grades, Junior High and High School.
“We use it as a fundraiser and we go in and get a little mat time to knock out the cobwebs,” Marlow coach Keith Kizarr said. “It takes a lot of work and a lot of volunteer and parent involvement for concessions and cleaning. I’m not going to lie, it’s pretty stressful.”
Weigh-in is scheduled for 6:30 to 8 a.m. with a three pound allowance. Organizers have encouraged participants to E-mail entry forms in order to have brackets ready for the first matches, which are scheduled to start by 9 a.m. Wrestling will continue through the morning into the afternoon.
“For me, I see things that we need to work on,” Kizarr said. “For some that have wrestled for several year and expect to do good, it’s mat time. It helps you get in the swing of things.”
Admission for the Open is $2 for adults and $1 for children.
