DUNCAN —
It took months of planning, hundreds of phone calls and two attempts, but by the time the last scorecard was turned in Monday, it would have been hard to call the third annual Pancreatic Celebrity Scramble anything but a huge success.
The tournament, which featured 113 players, raised an estimated $25,000 to help Oklahoma families dealing with pancreatic cancer. That’s about $6,000 more than the tournament raised the previous two years.
“Fantastic. That’s all I can say about it. It was fantastic,” said tournament organizer and pancreatic cancer survivor Jim Edwards. “We had so many compliments and so many people who said they want to come back and that’s what you want to hear.”
Under blue skies, the team of former Lieutenant Governor Jari Askins, Garrett Mitchell, Don Graham, Ed Clouse and Grant Mitchell claimed the purple ribbon trophy as they posted a round of 11-under 60 at the Duncan Golf & Tennis Club.
A total of 28 teams competed for the title as well as a slew of other prizes and even a free colonoscopy, while taking part in all the hijinks the course had to offer.
“Mike Hansen, the pro out here, and everybody else out here did a great job. They just made everything possible for us and helped give us some really good ideas,” said Edwards, who was pleased with how the event ran in its first year at the club. “They have done a fantastic job of getting this course ready, not just for us, but for all of the tournaments out here and for the members.
“Years ago, this was a great, great course and it had kind of gone down in past years, and now with the new owners, they are just doing great and the sky is the limit.”
While putting together the tournament is a year-round project for Edwards, he can now at least take a few days to relax, knowing that this year’s scramble was a hit.
“It’s a relief. I will go home tonight and I’ll sleep good,” he said. “But it’s almost like, I’ll go to work tomorrow and it will be a letdown because I don’t have to work on the tournament any more.”
At least, not until he gets to work on the fourth annual scramble.
