In their first meeting this season, Comanche and Marlow battled to an overtime thriller in which the Indians won, with CHS’ number 11 Garrett Morrow registering a double-double.
Tuesday night saw Marlow’s own number 11 Kirby Neufeld register a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, as the Outlaws survived 53-50 in the first round of the Stephens County Tournament.
“Any win is a big win, especially a rivalry win over Comanche,” Marlow coach John Garrett said. It doesn’t matter who is the better team or up by eleven, it’s always a dogfight. It’s been a long time since we’ve beat Comanche. Our guys did some good things, and battled to the bitter end.”
There was no shortage of excitement in the contest, perhaps no more so than late on in the fourth quarter.
With one minute left in regulation, the Outlaws held a 50-44 lead and looking like they were well in command.
How wrong they were as the Indians got to within three points at 53-50 with 24 seconds left.
But, there was to be plenty more twists and turns before the end result happened.
After being fouled behind the three-point line, Comanche’s Garrett Morrow was given three free throws, along with a chance to tie the game.
Unfortunately, none of the shots went down as the Outlaws dodged a bullet.
Braden Ledford almost sent the game into overtime for CHS, but his last second three-point attempt hit nothing but iron.
Comanche (6-10) though had its chances to make life difficult with 3:18 left in the fourth, and only down 48-41.
However, six straight possessions with six straight turnovers hindered the comeback effort by the Indians.
“I think we were playing really hard on defense and caused a lot of turnovers,” Comanche coach Nick Price said about his team’s play during the 3:18 stretch. “We didn’t do a good job though of turning those into good shots. Instead we were turning them into turnovers by us. If we just score on four of those possessions with two’s then we take the lead. I told our boys we lost the game when we had six possessions and didn’t score.”
At the end of the first quarter, the Outlaws held a 13-10 advantage, before entering the locker room for halftime with a 24-20 lead.
Marlow led by as many as 11 points in the third quarter as Comanche tried to stay within striking distance entering the fourth.
Garrett Morrow led the scoring for the Indians with 20 points to go with five rebounds. Grant Jones was close behind with 18 points with Braden Ledford adding seven points. Zach Young put in five points.
Other scorers for the Outlaws included Zac Beasler with 14 points, followed by Jackson Huddleston with eight points. Zak Key added five points, with Wes Coast putting in four points.
Marlow (10-6) advances to face the winner of the Velma-Alma/Bray-Doyle matchup at 6:20 p.m. Thursday night while Comanche will face the loser of the same contest at 9 p.m. Friday night.
