DUNCAN —
At this point in the season last year, everything was going right for the Central High Lady Bronchos, as they prepared for the Lady Broncho Invitational.
After successfully navigating through pool play, CHHS found itself in the championship game against Sterling. However, a heartbreaking 4-3 loss left a bad taste in the mouths of the Central High players.
Today will see another edition of the Lady Broncho Invitational get underway with Waurika, Ryan, Elmore City-Pernell, Chattanooga, Apache and Sterling all in action.
Friday will see the host Lady Bronchos join play along with Velma-Alma, Temple, Walters, Ninnekah and Navajo.
“We want to be in the finals and see what we can do,” Central High head coach Chad Weldon said. “It’s a tough tournament and we’ve got some tough games ahead of us this weekend.”
One of the most interesting matchups will come on Friday at 4:10 p.m. as the Lady Bronchos will meet Navajo. These teams are more than familiar with one another, as NHS eliminated Central High last season at Lady Broncho Field in the regional semi-finals.
“I just hope we play as good as we did against Bray-Doyle,” Lady Broncho outfielder Lora Lynn-Loomis said. “Hopefully everything will turn out good for us, and we want to get back at the teams who beat us out. We are ready to play them and everyone else in the tournament.”
Other matchups for Central High include Ninnekah (8 a.m.), Velma-Alma (11:30 a.m.) and Walters (8:50 p.m.).
Meanwhile, the Lady Comets will also be looking to rebound after a tough opening day at Cyril. V-A will take on Temple at 9:10 Friday morning in its first matchup of the tournament.
“I’m not very familiar with a lot of the teams from around this area,” V-A head coach Lacey Darity said. “I’ve been in Oklahoma City so I haven’t had much of a chance to really pay attention to teams around here the past year. This is all new territory for me and the rest of the girls. I hope to see some consistency and hopefully we can string some wins together.”
V-A’s other games will be against Ninnekah at 3 p.m. and Navajo at 6:30 p.m.
Saturday’s matchups will be determined once pool play games have been completed on Friday evening.
