DUNCAN —
For at least one more night at Lady Demon Field, the outcome of the game was of very little significance.
Saturday night saw some of the former Duncan High School softball standouts come back together to take on the varsity in the annual DHS alumni fundraiser game.
With head coach Robert Cowan providing the announcing for the evening, fans were treated to an entertaining game, which was broken open in the top of the fifth inning.
“The alumni take this a little more serious than the varsity do,” Cowan said. “After two long days of scrimmages, then the varsity are a little tired. They show up and try but they aren’t as excited as the alumni are about it. I think any of the surrounding coaches would love doing something like this, because the girls enjoy getting back out and playing together.”
Thanks to Class of 2008 graduate Davee Deaton’s three RBI triple with the bases loaded, the alumni took a 4-2 lead and never looked back, claiming an 8-2 victory over the varsity squad.
However, Deaton’s big hit should come as no surprise, as she was one of three alumni players who are currently playing college softball. Deaton has been playing shortstop at Oklahoma Christian University for the past three years.
“It’s awesome being back here,” Deaton said. “I have a lot of great memories here and made some great friends during my time here. Coach Cowan made softball a lot of fun for us and I have some great memories of him. It felt good helping my team because were all competitors and we want to win.”
Duncan’s varsity squad managed to grab a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when freshmen Alexis Richie and Raven Wilkins both scored on wild pitches.
But, the varsity offense sputtered throughout the evening, thanks in part to solid pitching from Class of 2011 graduate Tanya Whaley, who is currently playing softball at North Central Texas College in Gainsville, TX.
Whaley also initially gave the alumni team the lead in the top of the second with an RBI single to left field.
Kenzie Kennedy (09’) made it 5-2 in the top of the sixth when she scored on a wild pitch, before Allison Edwards (’10) hit an RBI single.
Deaton gave the alumni two more insurance runs when she collected another RBI triple in the top of the sixth, before scoring on a wild pitch.
Among the highlights of the evening, were DHS coach Amanda Lard being caught looking on a slow changeup pitch thrown by DHS pitcher Jenni Rather. Of course the strike three call was met with plenty of smiles and laughing from both dugouts.
There was also plenty of solid defense put on by both teams, with diving stops and solid defense shining throughout the night.
“Jenni through a good changeup pitch,” Cowan said. “I don’t think coach Lard was expecting her to throw that pitch.”
There won’t be any room for fun and games though on Tuesday when the Lady Demons open the regular season at home against Noble. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
