First-year Central High head coach Colin Watkins knew he’d have a strong offense, but that defense would be the key in 2010.
Friday night, the Bronchos’ defense rose to the occasion and held Mountain View-Gotebo to 12 points en route to a 62-12 45-rule in the third quarter.
“I think we definitely showed out potential on defense,” Watkins said. “It was a good start. We shut down their run and other than a few pass plays, a few missed coverages, we did a good job. That’s what we needed to see.”
Quarterback Kyler Newton racked up stats in both the passing and running games. Newton finished the night 15-of-24 passing for 220 yards and five touchdowns. He had 14 rushes for 122 yards and two TDs, including a 67-yard run.
Watkins was quick to praise his offensive line for the Bronchos’ production.
“Our offensive line has kind of been a question mark so far, but they did a great job,” said Watkins. “Grant Tomlinson is a sophomore center who is filling in for Jarrett Sparks (broken fibula). That’s a new position for him and he did excellent.”
Ashton Wright scored two touchdowns, one rushing and one on an interception return. Jeremy Russell had the biggest game from a receiver standpoint with 116 yards on seven catches and four touchdowns.
“We had a couple of big plays,” Watkins said. “Ashton really stepped up for us as cornerback and Jeremy Russell locked it up at the other corner. Both of them had big games on the offensive side of the ball as well.
“Defensively, those two shut down their passing game. I thought Bryce Spencer had an excellent game at defensive end. And the physical impact that Craig Bernard brings is just incredible. He’s our middle linebacker and fullback and he just plays good, physical football on both sides of the ball.”

Senior night for Duncan
There will be a sense of pride plus plenty of emotion Friday night at Duncan Gymnasium.
At 6:30 p.m. the No. 13 Duncan Lady Demons (15-7) will take to the floor against Ardmore (1-18) on Senior Night. Seniors Ashley Gonzalez, Hannah Allen, Dani Jo St. Clair, Britton and Brooklyn Scott along with D’Shala Culberson and Jamesia Milton will be honored during the contest. -
Indians prepare for dual state
With the second weekend in February comes the first part of the busiest three weeks on the high school wrestling schedule, Dual State.
The Comanche Indians will be making the three hour drive to Cushing, looking to advance past the semi-finals, something which has eluded them the past two years thanks to Perry. -

After a tough loss on the road last Friday night against Lawton MacArthur, it seemed the Duncan Demons needed a boost to get themselves going for the last week of the season. DHS had its sights set on using the Altus Bulldogs as the tool for their motivation Tuesday night at Duncan Gymnasium.

Lady Outlaws smother Rush Springs, 38-28
It wasn’t one of Marlow’s best offensive performances of the season. Luckily it was one of the Lady Outlaws best defensive showings.
For only the third time this season, Marlow held an opponent to fewer than 30 points and the Lady Outlaws topped the visiting Rush Springs Lady Redskins, 38-28. -
Culberson, DHS hold off Lady Bulldogs
There is a saying, “Revenge is a dish best served cold.” For the Duncan Lady Demons, a rematch against Altus at Duncan Gymnasium on a chilly evening seemed like the perfect motivation to help DHS avoid a two-game losing streak Tuesday night.
