It might have been a weekend full of colder weather, but that didn’t stop the Comanche Indians from opening their season on a successful note.
On Saturday at Lone Grove High School, CHS took down Marietta with an 8-0 score thanks to a solid dual pitching performance by senior Zach Young and junior Hunter Rice.
Game number two wasn’t quite as nice for the Indians, as they were edged out 2-1 by the host Longhorns, with senior Kale Reed going the distance in the game.
“The thing I liked the most about the games was that we never gave up,” Comanche coach Nick Reed said. “Our boys never quit and they finished the game. We’ve been talking for a long time about finishing and we did that. Obviously our hitting wasn’t as strong against Lone Grove, but we still turned in a solid performance.”
In addition to Kale Reed and Young, Comanche’s third senior Jonathan Robinson will also be a key component for the Indians’ success this season.
“We’ve got great senior leadership this season,” Coach Reed said. “These guys are really playing well right now. Hunter Rice is also a crucial part of this team at catcher. It’s amazing how much he has matured in less than a year. Just the overall attitude of this team is different than it was a year ago and we’re very excited for this season.”
Comanche will be back in action this afternoon on the road against Pauls Valley, before playing their home opener on Friday afternoon against Davis at the Field of Dreams.
“I don’t know much about Pauls Valley to be honest,” Reed said. “Davis is always a solid team and we know that. We just want to go out and compete and see what happens.”
