Indians rout Riverside

COMANCHE — Even though it was homecoming Friday night at Harley Stadium in Comanche, the Indians sure didn’t play like they were in a happy mood.

After struggling to defeat winless Walters last week, CHS was looking to make a statement in its first district contest against the Riverside Braves.

Mission accomplished.

Three touchdowns by Kale Reed (2 rush, 1 pass) and one by Clayton Fennell gave the Indians a 28-0 first quarter lead, sending them on their way to a 55-8 victory over the Braves.

“Last week it wasn’t a district game, and we just came out flat,” Reed said. “Our goal was to come out and take care of business tonight. When we stuck ‘em, then the ball started coming loose and we just capitalized on it. After we threw the ball then Riverside tried to spread it out and it just opened up some holes for us to run through.”

Perhaps the highlight of the night came in the fourth quarter for the Indians.

With the game well in hand, and the starters pulled from the game, backup quarterback Hunter Rice showed off his arm strength and connected with McKenna Rochell for a 76-yard touchdown, to cap off a successful night for CHS.

“We came into half-time and the coaches told me I was done at quarterback,” Reed said. “Hunter said he needed some help with the plays. McKenna was supposed to run a flag route, and instead ran a post route. But, Hunter found him and McKenna never went down so it worked out and was a great play.”

After Reed’s first touchdown gave the Indians a 6-0 lead at the 9:52 mark, it was the defense’s turn to steal the spotlight.

On Riverside’s first play from scrimmage, the ball was fumbled and recovered by Zach Young at the 30 yard line.

Three plays later, Fennell found the endzone from two yards out to make it 14-0, with the successful two-point conversion with 8:22 left in the first.

But, the fireworks weren’t over just yet for the Indians.

With the ensuing kickoff, came a thunderous hit from Cameron Nash, who jarred the ball loose from Riverside’s Roger Littlegeorge, resulting in the Indians recovering on the 25 yard line.

Reed was more than happy to cash in three plays later, as he made it 21-0 with another 23-yard touchdown run with 7:22 left in the first.

“Young players can grow each week, and our players learned a lot from last week,” Comanche coach Steve Justus said. “We told them don’t come out flat, come out and play like your supposed to and that’s what they did. The momentum swung in our favor right off the bat and that was something we really wanted this week.”

Reed added one more score in the first, a 21-yard touchdown pass to Rice, making it 28-0 after one complete.

In the second, Reed gave one last contribution for the evening, with a 10 yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Robinson, making it 35-0 at the 10:11 mark.

Fennell added one more, this time from 24 yards out, before Zach Young ran it in from 17 yards out to make it 48-0 at half-time.

Riverside got a consolation touchdown in the third, when Tyler Thompson found Paul Nicholas for a 44-yard touchdown pass, making it 48-8 with 54 seconds left.

“I was happy with our defense and special teams tonight,” Justus said. “Coach (Keith) Burton did a great job calling the defensive plays for us. We’ve got some good kids who double for us on offense and defense. It’s good to see other kids in there and let them get some experience.”

Comanche (3-1) will now prepare for a road contest against Mangum Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
