VELMA —
This season has been a very unique one for the No. 4 Velma-Alma Comets.
Throughout the season, V-A has defied the odds, beating every team set in their way, resulting in a perfect 22-0 record.
Tonight, the Comets will look to finish their regular season unblemished as they host Healdton (1-14) at 8:30 p.m. for Senior Night.
“We’ve played Healdton an average of about three times every season, so this is nothing new for us,” head coach Kenny Bare said about facing the Bulldogs for the third time. “Of course everyone will be excited about accomplishing going undefeated in the regular season. But we just want to win the next game in front of us and that’s how we’ve been all season.
“We’ve been very fortunate to have come this far without losing. But, our main goal is still in front of us and that’s what we’re focused on.”
In the first meeting between these teams this season, in the Bullet Energy Comet Classic on Dec. 8, the Comets claimed a 76-26 victory. Eight days later, V-A and Healdton met up again at the “Big House” in Oklahoma City, where the Comets turned up the scoring, winning 96-39.
V-A is one of only three boys’ teams in Oklahoma that are undefeated. Tulsa Union from Class 6A (19-0) and Class 4A Roland (20-0) are the other unbeaten boys’ teams.
In the past five games, the Comets cracked 70 points. At home V-A is outscoring its opponents by an average of 68.3-34 points per game.
Tonight will also be the last regular season home game for seniors Tyler Smith and Corbin Byford.
“Corbin is an extremely talented athlete and does so much for us off the court as well,” Bare said. “Tyler is another great player and has done so much for this team this season and the past couple of years as well.”
Before the Comets take a shot at perfection, the Lady Comets (12-11) will take the floor at 6:30 p.m. as they look for their fifth straight victory, when they face the Lady Bulldogs (8-10).
“We’re excited to play them (Healdton) again for the third time,” head coach Jerry Garrett said. “In reality we’re playing very well right now and have a lot of confidence going into this game.
“We want to keep the momentum going this week especially with the playoffs starting.”
In the first meeting of the season between these two teams, V-A pulled out a 34-29 victory in the third round of the Bullet Energy Comet Classic. HHS got one back in Oklahoma City, just eight days later, winning 39-30.
On the season the Lady Comets are 5-4 at home, having won their last two home contests over Wilson and Dibble.
“I feel like the first time we played Healdton, our defense was really solid,” Garrett said. “The second time we played more zone and we just got caught. The past four games have really shown how well we can play defensively, and we feel very good about it right now.”
Seniors Connor Southerland, Shelby Midgley and Ciara Milligan will be honored at tonight’s game for Senior Night.
TURNER at BRAY-DOYLE
Meanwhile, at Bray-Doyle this evening, the Lady Donkeys (15-5) will be hosting No. 10 and 24-0 Turner at 6:30 p.m. for Senior Night. On the season the Lady Falcons are 16-0 on the road while the Lady Donkeys are 6-0 at home. BDHS has scored at least 40 points in all but one home game this season. Senior Sarah Justus will be honored at tonight’s contest.
At 8 p.m. the Donkeys (3-13) will take the floor against the Falcons (2-18). THS is currently on an 11-game losing streak, while BDHS is 2-5 at home this season and will look to gain some momentum going into their district round game with Big Pasture on Friday night. Turner is 2-11 on the road this season. Seniors Ronnie Keck, Jesse Barton, Bradley Bratcher, and Aaron Price will be honored at tonight’s festivities.
