Marlow rallies to claim win over Cache

MARLOW — MARLOW — The No. 5 Marlow baseball team didn’t waste any time providing drama on the field Tuesday, using an eight run sixth inning to overcome a late three run defecit to win its season opener against Cache.

Backed by a complete game, 12 strikeout performance from senior pitcher Wakley Bergner, the Outlaws’ (1-0) offense came mainly from the eight walks it drew in the 9-4 victory.

“One of the things I preach to my guys is regardless of what the score is grind every at bat, whether we’re up twenty or down twenty, head coach Jeff Brewer said. “We can win with guys like that.”

After two and a half innings of scoreless play, junior centerfielder Kelby Richardson broke the tie after scoring on a Cache throwing error.

Cache had an answer in the one inning where they got to Bergner – the top of the fifth. The team scored four runs on two errors and a wild pitch, taking a three run lead.

That lead did not last for long.

With their backs against the wall, Marlow’s offense stayed patient and began to wake up. After Cache’s Skyler Long let in a run with a balk, Marlow second baseman Seth Scarborough cut the lead to one when he scored on a fielder’s choice from left fielder Logan Knox.

Another run arrived when senior infielder Tyler Brite was hit by a pitch, Richardson scored on a throwing error and Nick Yates added to the new lead after coming home on a throw that sailed over the pitcher’s head. After an errant throw went into centerfield, Brite and sophomore third baseman Beau Mitchell scored, perserving the lead for good.

“We didn’t do the small things early, but at the end of the day we had the most runs,” Brewer said. “I saw the rankings come out today and we’re number five, that’s how a number five team plays.”

Amid the chaos, Bergner stepped up for Marlow time and again. The senior kept Cache scoreless for all but one of his seven innings and even chipped in at the plate, getting on base three times.

“I just had good command,” Bergner said. “My arm felt good and I felt comfortable out there.”
