DUNCAN —
After going to a tiebreaker set with Cache in a near-win at the Cameron Tournament over the weekend, there was a new sense of confidence coming from the Duncan Lady Demon volleyball team.
Monday night provided another opportunity for DHS to taste victory for the first time in a match this season, as the Lady Demons traveled to El Reno.
Unfortunately for Duncan, it will have to wait for its first visit to the win column, as El Reno swept the Lady Demons 25-16, 25-13, and 25-16.
“There were times during the match we had some great comebacks,” Duncan coach Sandy Mitchell said. “The problem was we just let those slip away from us and that’s frustrating. Our serving though is what got us back into the match tonight for sure though.”
Sophomore Carly Kirkland was at the head of the serving charge, leading the team with five aces on the evening.
Kayla Condern led the Lady Demons in both kills with two on the night, and in assists with six total.
Rebecca Brewer did her part as well, collecting five digs in the match.
“Coming into the match our girls knew they could go toe-to-toe with El Reno,” Mitchell said. “I feel they did just that and much more. We just fell asleep in the first set and it cost us, even though we managed to get ourselves back in the game. But the girls are improving and that’s what matters.”
Duncan will stay on its long road trip as the Lady Demons will be back in action Thursday night against Lawton Eisenhower with matches starting at 4 p.m.
“I don’t think the girls are afraid to play anyone right now,” Mitchell said. “It’s just a matter of getting themselves to believe they can do more than just play with someone, but beat them at the same time.”
