Duncan Tennis players brave weather in tourney

It isn’t clear whether or not Duncan’s tennis players embraced the heat over the weekend. But they competed in it.

A full contingent of Demon tennis players got some solid work in Friday and Saturday in the Duncan First Bank & Trust Junior Open and carried away some top honors. Competition varied in doubles and singles action from 18 years old down to elementary age.

In boys’ 18 doubles, Carter Jones and Davis Loafman dropped a tough match in the first round, falling 6-0, 1-6, 7-6 to Ryan Mitchell and John Teeters. Duncan’s Trevor Moore teamed up with Kyle Meraz of Lawton to defeat Andre Voung of Duncan and Justin Bailey of Lawton 6-3, 6-2. Moore and Meraz then fell to Kolt Byerly and Keegan Zimmerman 6-1, 6-2.

In girls’ 18 doubles, Kathryn Jeffords and Britton Scott beat Kaitlyn Loafman and Shauna Beach 6-3, 6-1 in the championship. Loafman and Beach advanced to the finals with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 win over Autumn Gordon and Sydney Hendricks.

Nic Zinn represented Duncan in boys’ 18 singles, falling to Keegan Zimmerman 6-2, 6-1. Elijah Whiteagle went on to claim the consolation championship with a win over Zinn.

Four Demons competed in a loaded boys’ 16 singles field. Carter Jones dropped his first match 6-3, 6-0 to Sam Johnson and Trevor Moore fell 6-1, 6-0 to Connor Long. Davis Loafman beat Ryan Mitchell 6-1, 6-2 before losing to Long 6-2, 6-1. Blake Bartlett fell 6-5, 6-5 to Gabriel Kanelopoulos.

Moore defeated Mitchell 6-3, 6-5 in the consolation bracket and then beat Jones 6-1, 6-5. Bartlett lost his match in consolations 6-0, 6-0 to Jacob Gillespie. In the consolation championship, Moore fell to Kyle Meraz 6-3, 6-3.

Duncan enjoyed better success in the winner’s bracket of boys’ 14 singles. Ethan Lang beat Randall Nesom 5-7, 7-5, (10-7) and then fell to Hayden Cook 6-3, 6-2. Cameron McCasland fell to Steven Wolf 6-0, 6-1 in his first match and Colton O’Neal 6-5, 6-2 in his second match. Sam Allen opened with a 0-6, 6-0, (10-9) win over O’Neal and then fell to Wolf 6-0, 6-0.

Ryan Robinson beat Justin Bailey 6-0, 6-2 in his first match and followed with a 6-5, 6-1 loss to Ferguson. Voung beat Alan Hruby 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and fell to Jackson Monroe 6-0, 6-3. Hruby beat Jones 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the consolation finals where he fell to Nesom 6-1, 6-2.

Competition in girls’ 16 singles was dominated by Duncan with Brittany Toone beating Jeffords 6-1, 6-4 to take the championship. Toone opened with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Kaitlyn Loafman and then beat Brooklyn Scott 6-0, 6-1. Scott beat Beach 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals.

Jeffords opened with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Gaasbeck in the first round and beat Britton Scott 6-2, 2-6 (10-8) in the semifinals. Scott beat Autumn Gordon 6-1, 6-1 in the first round.

In the consolation bracket, Gordon fell to Gaasbeck 6-2, 6-5 and Beach beat Loafman 6-5, 6-3.

Angel Gordon fell to Emily Faulkner 6-0, 6-1 in girls’ 14 singles while Sydney Henricks lost to Marissa Conway 6-2, 6-5. Samantha Cassidy beat Conway 6-4, 6-0 to advance to the finals where she fell to Faulkner 2-6, 6-1 (10-8). Henricks beat Gordon 1-6, 6-4 (10-5) in the consolation finals.

Alexandra Bowers claimed top honors in girls’ 12 singles, beating Marisa Moore 6-4, 6-5 in the finals. Moore beat Rachel Hartman 6-0, 6-1 to reach the finals. MacKenzie Rains beat Katherine Hruby 6-4, 6-3 in the first round. Rains then fell to Bowers 6-0, 6-0.

In the consolation bracket, Hruby took the title with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Hartman.

DHS headed to MacArthur for rematch

Since dropping their finale of the East Central Tournament on Jan. 7, the No. 14 Lady Demons (14-6) have reeled off seven straight victories. Tonight they will look to make it eight as they travel to face the No. 16 Lawton MacArthur Lady Highlanders (9-7) at 6:30 p.m.

Area 2A, 3A squads coming home for playoffs

On Thursday afternoon, the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association announced postseason sites for Classes 2A-4A, granting Class 2A Empire and Class 3A Comanche home district games, while giving 3A Marlow a home region game.
