Lady Bulldogs run away from DHS

DUNCAN — The Duncan girls’ basketball team was scheduled for a new game Tuesday, but it turned out being a rerun.

In similar fashion to their last home game, the Lady Demons hung close in the first half, only to see Cache run away with it in the third quarter en route to a 71-49 win.

“If it wasn’t for that third quarter, we would have been in the game and maybe won it,” Duncan coach Aaron Minor said. “It wasn’t turnover issues or bad defense. We just didn’t make shots, not even layups.”

Duncan (1-5) went into halftime down 34-26 in a game that had been pretty back-and-forth to that point.

After knocking down a 3-pointer in the opening seconds of the third quarter, though, the Lady Demons went more than 6 1/2 minutes without a bucket, during which time they slid into a 57-31 hole.

Against Ardmore two weeks prior, Duncan went into halftime down three points before the deficit swelled to 29 by the end of the third quarter.

“It’s just a mindset, and I think it comes from inexperience,” Minor said of his team’s third-quarter struggles. “It’s just being in a game, where you did play good in the first half, just being able to come out in the second half and keep up the intensity and play just as good.”

By the end of the third period, the Lady Demons trailed 59-31. In the fourth, they showed their resilience, finally making it through Cache’s full-court press and finding success on the other side and they cut the margin to 65-48.

Senior Jamie Carberry led Duncan with 24 points and 12 rebounds, while junior Rainy Sanford had nine points and junior Tania Eliz finished with seven points and nine rebounds.
