DUNCAN — Duncan tennis player Melanie Barnes was honored Tuesday with the Jim Thorpe Association’s All-State Tennis Player of the Year award.

Barnes, a DHS graduate, finished the 2010 campaign with a 27-3 record at No. 1 singles for the Lady Demons en route to a runner-up finish at the state tournament in May. She earned All-State along with teammate Kate LeValley. The duo competed on the West team in the All-State Tennis Tournament Tuesday at Oral Roberts University.

The West girls beat the East girls 11-1, and Barnes and LeValley finished a perfect 3-0. Barnes played Samantha Fuller from Cascia Hall and won the pro set 8-1. LeValley beat Ada’s Madison Whitworth 8-2.

In doubles action, Barnes and LeValley teamed up to beat another set of teammates, Claremore’s Brooke Gunter and Kristin Richardson. The Duncan team won 8-5.

“The Duncan kids did good,” Duncan coach Phil Barnes said. “They won all their matches. It was a fun week and we had a really nice time.”
