Golf Digest, Golfweek recognize The Territory

DUNCAN — Two of the golf industries’ biggest magazines again made public what Territory Golf and Country Club members already know: There’s is one of the best courses around.

Golf Digest named The Territory the fourth best golf course in the state of Oklahoma, while Golfweek called the club, the 35th best residential course in the country.

“It’s definitely a source of pride for our members,” Territory director of operations Jeff Tyrrell said. “Being a part of a club that is recognized not only in the state, but in the country is pretty special.”

The awards, though, are nothing new for the Territory.

The club has been on Golfweek’s annual list since 2007 (ranging from 26th to 60th). This is the fourth time it has made Golf Digest’s bi-annual list and matches their best finish on that list.

It could be argued, though, that making those lists was tougher this year than ever before as greenskeepers worked to keep the course in pristine condition despite a lingering drought and oppressive heat.

“It’s been a huge challenge for us,” Tyrrell said of maintaining the course. “Our superintendent (Brad Babek) did some really proactive things in 2012 with the aerating of the greens.

“He did small aeration every Monday, which kept their temperatures down, allowed airflow and for water to seep in and for the grass to grow deeper roots. So, our greens are really healthy.”

But the recognition from the magazines was due to more than just the condition of the course. The natural beauty of the course, it’s challenging design and the various club facilities were all factors.

“Out here we kind of have a country feel but with the refinement of a nice golf course,” Tyrrell said. “I get the comment a lot that it just feels right.”

Apparently, the folks at Golf Digest and Golfweek, would agree with that comment.
