The Duncan girls’ basketball team has had a bit of a problem with the third quarter this season.
On Thursday, though, the Lady Demons had no such problem as they clawed back from a double-digit deficit to be down just one point, with the ball in hand, with 7 seconds left on the clock.
The comeback, though, would not be completed and Duncan fell 59-57 to Harding Charter School in the first round of the Little Axe Tournament in Norman.
“With 57 seconds left, we were down seven or eight points and we to cut it to one, we just never could get over that hump,” Duncan coach Aaron Minor said. “With 7 seconds left, they missed a free throw and we got the rebound, with no timeouts left, and tried to go down the court for a shot, but we turned the ball over.”
Senior Jamie Carberry helped keep Duncan in the game as she racked up a team-high 32 points.
Duncan (2-13) trailed 29-19 at halftime before battling back to make it an exciting finish.
“We didn’t come out very good. We were down 11 or 12 and we just came out flat in the first quarter,” Minor said. “But the other three quarters we won. We outplayed them for three quarters, we just got into too big of a hole in the first quarter.”
The Lady Demons will move to the consolation side of the bracket, where they will meet Santa Fe South at 10 a.m. today.
