Comets try to declaw unbeaten Wolves

DUNCAN — After falling in dramatic fashion in the Red Dirt Baseball Classic, the Velma-Alma baseball team must move on fast if it is to handle the next challenge that awaits them.

The Comets (1-2) will hit the road Monday to play Davis (4-0), the unbeaten No. 12 team in Class 3A.

Heading into the game, the teams are headed in two different directions.

Velma suffered two straight heartbreaking one run losses at the Classic after losing early leads. Friday’s 7-6 loss to Central saw Velma ahead 4-3 and 6-4, but the team relinquished those leads and eventually the Bronchos pulled ahead.

In Saturday’s 6-5 defeat against Tipton, the team took a 4-1 lead into the fifth inning before the Tigers slowly began their comeback, scoring three in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Velma responded when Cody Matthews scored on a wild pitch, but was unable to score again and fell just one run short.

On offense, V-A will turn to Matthews, Ryan Ross, Strait Ille and Garret Dearmond, who all scored in the loss.

Despite its late-inning woes, Velma’s starting pitching has thrived – Kelton Brown was the latest example Saturday, allowing just one run and four hitting in four innings.

While the Comets have lost two games in late game situations, the Wolves have most recently thrived at that time.

The team have won four straight to open the year, with its most recent victory coming in convincing form – an 11-4 trouncing of Comanche on the road.

A late surge preserved the lead, as Davis put up a combined seven runs in the final two innings.

Outside of a 1-0 grinder of a win at Wynnewood last week, the Wolves offense has put the ball in play early in often, scoring nine, nine and eleven runs in its other three contests.

There has been little to no trouble on the mound for the Wolves, who have let up a combined six runs in its first four games.

Play is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
