Duncan softball set for Triple Crown Tournament

DUNCAN — After starting the week with two wins against Ardmore and Altus this week, the Duncan Lady Demon softball team left for Fort Collins, Colo., this morning for the Triple Crown Tournament this weekend.

Lady Demon head coach Robert Cowan said he was excited to go on this year’s trip. He also added that this year’s trip is different from years past.

“This year we have gotten a charter bus to take to Colorado and in years past we drove vans,” Cowan said. “Having the charter buses is a way for us to bond together as a team and just make it a nicer trip up there and back for everyone.”

Senior first baseman Jaci Jessen echoed Cowan’s sentiments and said that she is excited for the trip.

“Having a charter bus allows us to ride together as a team,” Jessen said. “I think that will give us more of a bonding experience and bring us closer.”

The Lady Demons will begin play at 9 a.m. Friday against Fort Collins High School. They will then play at 11 a.m. against Discovery Canyon from Colorado Springs, Colo., and finish the day against Pine Creek High School at 3 p.m. On Saturday, the Lady Demons will begin with North Glenn High School at 9 a.m. and the Lady Demon JV team will also be taking part in a game Saturday afternoon.

“One of the teams dropped out of the tournament, so there was an open space and we are filling it with our JV team,” Cowan said. “This just gives our JV girls a chance to get out there and play some and just enjoy the experience.”

Playing against teams from a different state could be a

challenge for the Lady Demons, but it could also be have some positives.

“We don’t know anything about the other teams and that makes it better,” Jessen said. “It’s better, because we can go out and play our game and not theirs.”

Lady Demon pitcher Tanya Whaley said no matter what the Lady Demons have to play hard.

“In order for us to keep going strong we have to go out and play hard, keep our bats going and have a strong defense,” Whaley said.

Duncan hosts Altus tonight
ometimes it’s not how hard you fall, it’s how fast you get back up.
After a tough overtime loss Friday night at Lawton MacArthur, the No. 14 Duncan Lady Demons (14-7) will look to rebound this evening against the No. 11 Altus Lady Bulldogs (12-6) with tip-off set for 6:30 p.m. from Duncan Gymnasium.

For a moment it looked like the streak was going to make a turnaround, but in the end, it didn’t pull through as the Lady Demons fell in overtime to the Lady Highlanders, 67-62.
