Comets looking for more in second week of playoffs

DUNCAN — Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.

Last week in the first round of the playoffs against Watonga, many considered the Velma-Alma Comets lucky to have escaped victorious, despite fumbling the ball six times.

This week, V-A will need to be good in order to make it to the third round for the first time since 2010.

Standing in the way, is undefeated Thomas-Fay-Custer, a team who has yet to give up more than 20 points in any game this season.

“We need to take care of the football first and foremost,” V-A coach Greg Gothard said. “This is as disciplined of a team I have seen in quite a few years. They are a very well-coached team and have a group of kids who do everything right and don’t show many weaknesses. Keeping the ball away from them will be the key for us. When we’re on defense we need to tackle in space.”

Hollis has been the only team this season to keep Thomas-Fay-Custer in check, as the Terriers had to fight for a 21-14 victory back on October 12.

Since 2004, V-A has had mixed success in the second round of the playoffs, especially on the road.

After claiming road victories in 2005, 2006 and 2007 in the second round, the Comets had to wait until 2010 to taste victory away from home in the playoffs.

Last season in the second round, Minco eliminated V-A, ironically enough on the road.

“Our backs are against the wall this week,” Comet defensive back Alan Beck said. “I’m enjoying the experience of playoff football, and we need to play as a team this week. I don’t want this to end anytime soon."
