DUNCAN —
Membership is up. More rounds of golf are being played. And, now, more players are vying for the title of club champion.
The Duncan Golf & Tennis Club is set to host its club championship this weekend, marking the 33rd year for the event, and numbers are up from recent years with 60 of the 295 members (20.3 percent) signed up as of Wednesday afternoon.
“Even if we don’t get another player signed up, I’ll be happy with the participation that we have for this tournament,” club professional Mike Hansen said.
But the field for this year’s club championship has more than just strength in numbers, it has talent.
“At most of the clubs I have been at, there are usually one or two players that could win (the club title),” Hansen said. “Here we have probably eight guys that could win it.”
Aaron Simpson is the defending champion after shooting a two-day score of 2-over last year. If the Cameron University golfer wants to in the exclusive club of repeat champions (which has just four members, including five-time champion and former lieutenant governor Marty Askins) he will likely have to do better than that this time around as the course, and the competition, are in better shape.
“I think you’d have to shoot under par to win,” Hansen said. “Somebody will shoot under par.”
Along with Simpson, Hansen said other favorites could be Chris Dickerson, Micah Russell, J.J. Russell, Ryan Hightower, Brent Cole and Derek Harman.
Play will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, with all players going off No. 1. The action will start at the same time for Sunday’s final round.
Players in the championship flight will only be ranked by their gross score, while players in other flights will have a gross score and net score, which factors in his or her handicap.
