DUNCAN —
After Day 1, Caden Stevens is in contention to be a world champion.
The Duncan youngster is tied for 11th after the first of three rounds at the 7-year-old division of the U.S. Kids Word Championship in Pinehurst, N.C.
Stevens carded a 3-over 39 on nine holes at Pinehurst’s Southern Pines North Course.
Stevens, who got help funding his trip from local golfers and businesses, opened his round with back-to-back bogeys but got back to even par with back-to-back birdies on the par-4 fourth and par-5 fifth.
After seven holes, Stevens was still at even par before picking up a double-bogey on the eighth and a bogey on the ninth.
Stevens is one stroke out of the top 10 and three strokes out of the top five, in a division that features 85 players.
Justin Sui of Lake Orion, Mich., is in the lead after shooting a 4-under 32 on the first day.
