DUNCAN —
Fans who can’t wait until the opening day of softball season will be in luck this weekend.
Starting on Thursday, the Duncan Festival will be getting underway with 15 teams from around the state converging upon Lady Demon Field for a series of scrimmages.
Games will begin at 9 a.m. with Waurika taking on Lawton Eisenhower.
“We’ve had a month off and you can practice and hit off the machine all you want, but there’s really nothing like game action,” Duncan coach Robert Cowan said. “Getting some real time pitching and hitting will be exactly what we need to get us ready for the season.”
Among the other teams taking part in the festival are Velma-Alma, Central High, Sterling, Frederick, Comanche, Rush Springs, Ardmore, Anadarko, Chattanooga, Chickasha, Lawton High, and Lawton MacArthur.
DHS will be taking on Waurika (11:20 a.m.) and Lawton High (2:50 p.m.) Thursday, before facing Comanche (8:10 p.m.) and Rush Springs (5:50 p.m.) on Friday.
“Softball is the one sport where it doesn’t matter what class your opponent is in,” Cowan said. “Playing lower class schools will make us just as good as if we were going to play a Class 5A opponent.”
Meanwhile, Central High will be facing Lawton High (5:10 p.m.) and Chickasha (6:20 p.m.) on Thursday, while meeting Lawton MacArthur (10:50 a.m.) and Frederick (1:10 p.m.) on Friday.
“These scrimmages will be all about getting us into game shape for the season,” Central High head coach Chad Weldon said. “I expect us to play with the higher class of schools we’ll be facing and I want us to challenge them a little. We won’t see schools like this day in and day out so we’re ready for them.”
Velma-Alma will be taking on Lawton Eisenhower at 10:10 Thursday morning, then play the Lady Highlanders of Lawton MacArthur in the afternoon at 12:30.
Comanche will meet Rush Springs Friday evening at 7 p.m. before playing the finale of the festival with Duncan.
