Taking care of business

DUNCAN — Friday night was a good night to be a Central High fan.

With the visit of Temple to Broncho Gymnasium, the Lady Bronchos turned on the offense and blew a 23-12 halftime lead wide open, resulting in a 53-33 victory.

“They (Temple) guarded Lora-Lynn (Loomis) pretty well and made things difficult for us,” Central High coach Chad Weldon said. “Our seniors though played like they were supposed to out there and the team stepped up.”

Faith Harris led the Lady Bronchos (7-1) with 16 points on the evening, with Lacie Phillips and Caitlyn White each scoring 11 points. Aleia Daniels registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Lora-Lynn Loomis finished with six points.

Meanwhile the Bronchos made it a third straight game with 70 plus points as they ran wild over the Tigers by a 73-32 margin.

“I still think we are progressively getting better,” Central High coach John Nease said. “We shot a good percentage from the free throw line and outside the arc as well. I had challenged them to be better on defense and they answered that call.”

Temple struggled from the start as the Tigers found themselves down 20-7 after one, then 36-17 at halftime.

CHHS outscored Temple 37-15 in the second half to claim its fourth straight win.

Dallin Ferrin continued his strong play with 17 points to led the Bronchos (6-2), with Zarek Hickman scoring 13 points. Kevin Harris and Matthew Quisenberry each scored nine points, with Connor Albiston putting in eight points.

EMPIRE

This weekend saw both Empire squads participating in the Wilson Black and Gold Classic.

For the Lady Bulldogs, it was another impressive showing, in what has been a strong first half of the season for head coach Jason Allensworth and his squad.

In their opening game, EHS brushed aside Fox by a 62-18 scoreline.

Leading the charge was Kaelyn Allensworth with 17 points, followed by Melaina Yearby with 15 points. Jessica Carney and Alyssa George each scored eight points.

Things went sour though in the semi-finals as the Lady Bulldogs fell to Achille 46-33, despite 15 points from Melaina Yearby and six points from Alyssa George.

As a result of the defeat, EHS found itself in the third place game against the Lady Eagles of Waurika.

Sherrie Dewey played the role of hero as her last second layup gave the Lady Bulldogs (7-2) third place by a 41-39 score.

Waurika held a slim 19-18 lead going into halftime, before being slightly outscored in the second half 23-21.

Yearby scored 14 points in the winning effort, while Alyssa George scored 12 and Ashlie Atkinson scored 11 points.

Both Yearby and George were named to the All-Tournament Team in the process.

As for the Bulldogs, they fell to Elmore City-Pernell in their opening round game, before rebounding to win 51-46 against Thackerville. In the fifth place game, Fox managed to outscore the Bulldogs 50-45. No other information was made available.

WAURIKA

It was a mixed bag for the Eagles and Lady Eagles as each team both went 1-2 at the Black and Gold Classic.

Round one saw the Lady Eagles claim a 66-31 victory over Thackerville, while the Eagles also defeated THS with an 81-65 win.

The Lady Eagles (2-6) dropped a close game to the Lady Badgers of ECP by a 37-35 score, while the Eagles dropped a 75-44 decision to the Badgers.

The third place game wasn’t kind to the Eagles (2-6) as they fell to Achille 72-48.
