DUNCAN —
The Velma-Alma Comets established their tempo and game plan early on and cruised through the first round of their own tournament Tuesday.
By the end of the first quarter the Comets were up 17 points on Healdton and they didn’t take their foot off the gas until the fourth quarter, rolling to an 88-44 victory in the opening round of the Bullet Energy Comet Classic.
“We played really well, from the opening tip we were just running,” Velma-Alma coach Kenny Bare said. “We shot the ball pretty well, too.”
Pacing that attack was senior Zac Cable, who knocked down five 3-pointers en route to a 22-point performance. Junior Jaz Gayanich tallied 17 points, while senior Dallen Mercer had 15, senior Checotah Lynn had eight and senior Dallas Bare added six.
Velma-Alma (3-0) led 23-6 at the end of the first quarter and 47-22 by halftime before stretching it to 74-27 going into the fourth quarter.
The Comets advance to the semifinals, where they will face Carnegie at 8 p.m. tonight.
