DUNCAN —
Opening day turned into a very late night for the Duncan Lady Demons on Tuesday.
With the second game of a doubleheader against Noble starting late, DHS played past 10 p.m., but will surely feel it was well worth it in the end.
After claiming a 10-5 victory in game one, the Lady Demons made sure they completed the sweep with a 10-0 victory in game two, thanks in part to a five run explosion in the third inning.
“We played much better in the second game then we did in the first game,” DHS head coach Robert Cowan said. “There were some adjustments made defensively which helped us out a lot. We also adjusted to the speed of the pitching and just hit the ball better.”
With the game well in hand in the top of the seventh inning, Duncan sophomore Berkley Faulkner put an exclamation point on proceedings with her first home run of the season, giving the Lady Demons an 8-0 lead.
Senior pitcher Jenni Rather (1-0) was able to shut down the Lady Bears with solid work from the mound, allowing just two hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
Duncan will be on the road this weekend at the Frederick Festival, playing Mangum (7 p.m.) and Frederick (8:15 p.m.) on Saturday night.
“Mangum is going to be a very competitive team against us,” Cowan said. “But I feel that’s a game we should be able to win against them. Frederick has some solid pitching which we need to be ready for this weekend.”
