Softball teams from across southwest Oklahoma will make their way to Duncan today and Friday for final dress rehearsals leading up to the season.
Sterling and Lawton Mac will kick off a festival of softball today at 8:40 a.m. that will extend through Friday evening. Among the area schools competing in the event will be Bray-Doyle, Waurika, Central High and Comanche as well as Duncan.
The Lady Demons will play eight games over two days and will wrap up the weekend with an alumni game Saturday night. By that time, Duncan coach Robert Cowan hopes to have a couple of questions answered. Of those questions, finding a final starter in the outfield is a significant concern. Cowan would also like to see the bats come alive.
“We have several girls competing for a starting position in the outfield,” Cowan said. “We will have eight games over two days and we will get a lot of live arm at-bats.
“In the scrimmage against Sterling on Tuesday, defensively we didn’t play bad although we made a few mistakes. We just didn’t hit the ball as well as I hoped we would.”
Cowan will also use this weekend to get all four of his pitchers some work. Madison Pewitt, Tanya Whaley, Ashlee Perkins and Laura Davis are all expected to throw two games each.
There will be admission charged to the scrimmages and a concession will be open as the Lady Demons raise funds for an upcoming tournament in Colorado.
“We don’t try to get rich off of this,” Cowan said, “we don’t charge the schools a penny.”
The Lady Demons will also charge admission to the Alumni game, which will take place on Saturday.
“It should be fun for everybody,” Cowan said. “I don’t know what kind of participation we will have this year because we will lose some alumni to a wedding. I’m sure there will be enough alumni to play.”
