Lady Longhorns gore Marlow in season opener

MARLOW — With a mounting injury crisis, Marlow’s Ashley O’Dell did what any senior player would do for her team in the season opener.

Stand and deliver a solid performance.

Unfortunately, the Lone Grove Lady Longhorns were having none of it, as an 8-5 run down the final 2:17 in the fourth proved to be the difference as LGHS spoiled Marlow’s home opener 51-47.

“We just weren’t prepared tonight, and I’ll take the blame for that,” Marlow coach Kirk Harris said. “Mentally we were locked up and got very frustrated. Our decision making wasn’t very good the majority of the game. Our effort was there, but we just made too many mistakes.”

After taking a 43-42 lead at the 2:17 mark of the fourth, things went sour for the Lady Outlaws.

Two quick baskets turned the momentum around and gave Lone Grove a 47-43 lead at the 1:57 mark. Try as they might, the Lady Outlaws simply couldn’t find the magic which had given them an eight point lead early in the third quarter at 30-22.

“I tried to tell the girls the first three minutes of the second half are extremely important,” Harris said. “We got on a little bit of a run, but they (Lone Grove) hit shots down the stretch. They made defensive adjustments a lot better than we did. Our fans deserve better than the performance we gave them tonight, especially for a home opener.”

Lone Grove held a slim 12-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, before Marlow went into the locker room at halftime up 27-22.

Leading the scoring on the evening for the Lady Outlaws (0-1) was O’Dell with 18 points, followed by Tory Nations with eight points. Shayna Throckmorton and Anne Davenport each scored six, while Anne Wortham put in four points.

Lone Grove was led by Haley McCutchen, Hannah Howard, Savannah Throneberry, and Madison Jones who all scored nine points on the evening.

Marlow will be back in action Friday night on the road against Elgin at 6:30 p.m.
