RANDLETT —
Sometimes the odds are just too much to overcome. For the Bray-Doyle Donkeys, they knew coming into Friday nights district matchup with Big Pasture at Big Pasture High School, it was going to be tough. But, with senior Jesse Barton out due to injury, the circumstances became much more difficult.
BPHS raced out to a 7-0 less than 20 seconds into the game, and never let the Donkeys get settled into the game. In the end the Rangers romped to a 78-35 victory.
“Jesse got injured during warmups at Empire,” Bray coach Kenny McGough said after the loss. “Him not playing was just a loss of a leader and someone who brings a lot of explosiveness to our team.
“Tenacity is the word I’d use to describe Big Pasture. They just keep coming and get teams out of what they want to do. They completely controlled every aspect of the game tonight and it showed.”
By the time B-D finally got on the board against the Rangers, it was 13-2 with 3:25 left in the first quarter. Two minutes later, the lead had been cut to 11 at 17-6 and it looked as though the Donkeys might be able to start gaining some momentum in the contest.
Unfortunately, that was as close as the Donkeys got on the evening. BPHS held a 21-8 lead after the end of the first quarter and held B-D to just 9 points in the second, making it 38-17 at the break.
With 5:09 left in the third the Donkeys were still fighting, but the deficit was 33 at 53-20. After three complete quarters it was 65-24 in favor of the Rangers. Things slowed down in the fourth as BPHS breezed into the district final.
GIRLS
One of the cheers performed by the Bray-Doyle cheerleaders includes the line, “Defense get tough.” Apparently, the Lady Donkeys were listening on Friday night as they took on Wilson in the first round of districts from Big Pasture High School in Randlett.
A quick start by B-D propelled the Lady Donkeys to a 10-1 lead and they never looked back. Wilson did what it could with only six players, but the numbers game caught up with them and the Lady Donkeys walked out with a 62-27 victory.
“I just thought it was a good team effort tonight,” Bray-Doyle coach Jaicee Powers said after the game. “We moved the ball well and ran our offense well. Ashlee (Kelly) was playing really aggressive and we wanted to get her the ball as much as we could.
“Our defense sets the tone for us in every game. When we come out with some intensity on defense then we play really well.”
At the end of the first quarter it was all Lady Donkeys as they led 18-5. With 4:55 left before halftime, the Lady Eagles found themselves down 22-5. Wilson head coach John Black didn’t do his team any favors, receiving a technical foul with less than 2 minutes to go before halftime. When the horn sounded for the break it was B-D leading 38-7.
In the second half, the Lady Eagles finally were able to reach double digits in scoring, but by the time they did it was 46-11, with 1:25 left in the third. With three complete it was 52-11.
Wilson’s offense came alive in the fourth, putting together its best offensive showing of the game with 16 points, but it was too little too late for the Lady Eagles as they saw their season come to an end.
“We’re an experienced team and we know what’s at stake when we play Big Pasture,” Powers said. “They’re all excited about the challenge and I hope we play like we did tonight.”
Leading the scoring for the Lady Donkeys was Kelly with 18 points followed by senior Sarah Justus with 15. Sophomore Makenzy Williams also scored double figures with 12 on the night.
Wilson was paced by senior Kayla Turner with 15.
“I thought we all did pretty good and worked hard,” Kelly said about her team following the game. “We just went into practice and worked hard. Last year our season didn’t end how we wanted it to so we’re making sure it doesn’t happen again.”
B-D improves it overall record to 18-5 while Wilson ends its season 0-16.
The Lady Donkeys were scheduled to face Big Pasture for the district title Saturday night in Randlett.
